What is IHM Part I?

Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM) Part I is a mandatory requirement under the IMO Hong Kong Convention and EU Ship Recycling Regulation for ships engaged in international trade.
It identifies and documents hazardous materials contained in the ship’s structure, equipment, and systems to ensure safe operation, maintenance, and future ship recycling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Hong Kong Convention?
The Hong Kong International Convention for the Safe and Environmentally Sound Recycling of Ships (HKC) entered into force on June 26,2025. It mandates that ships, particularly those over 500 GT, must be recycled at authorized facilities, manitain an Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM), and follow safe, environmentally sound practices to manage hazardous substances.

Is IHM Part I mandatory?

Yes. IHM part I is mandatory prior issuance of IHM certificate. This document is prepare by HazMat expert. Inventory of Hazardous Materials (IHM): Ships must carry an IHM identifying materials like asbestos, heavy metals, and hydrocarbons, to be updated throughout their life.

Do you handle Class submission?

IHM part I documents has to be submitted by shipowner/manager to Classification Society for issuance of IHM certificate.

​

Can IHM be done during operation?

Yes. Sampling process can be done during vessel in operation and during vessel in dry condition.

How long is IHM certification process?

Normally it will take around 1 month  starting from

preparation / review documents > onboard sampling process > lab > report > Initial survey by RO + issuance of IHM certificate.
